Install Mouse Cursor Schemes on Windows 7

poring!
I recently had my old hard drive break down and I replaced it with a new one (so much for my un-backed up files!). One of the things I set up on my newly installed hard disk was the mouse cursors. I've become used to the Raganarok Online animated cursors that I downloaded somewhere (credit to the person who created them! don't know who he/she was though..) that I want them re-installed as my mouse cursor scheme. Problem is, I don't want to re-assign each and every new cursor to replace the default one. So as usual, Google time! What I found is just past the break.

You will need any cursor file that has a format extension file of .ani (for animated cursors) and .cur (for static ones). And you will need these 15 files:

• Regular Pointer (Normal Select)
• Help Cursor (Help Select)
• Loading Cursor (Working in Background)
• Busy Cursor (Busy)
• Beam Cursor (Precision Select)
• Unavailable Cursor (Unavailable)
• Horizontal (Horizontal Resize)
• Vertical (Vertical Resize)
• Diagonal 1 (Diagonal Resize 1)
• Diagonal 2 (Diagonal Resize 2)
• Move Cursor (Move)
• Hand (Link Select)
• Cross (Move)
• Pen (Handwriting)• Alternate Cursor (Alternate Select)

I took the liberty to add the Ragnarok Online Cursors I downloaded here. You will need the notepad file included on the compressed file.

install.inf
Unzip the files and you will notice the cursors included and an install.inf file. Open the Install.inf using notepad (right click on the file and pick open with... then choose notepad) or any text editor program that recognizes .inf extensions.

You will notice that once you open install.inf, you will find the file names of the cursors included on the zip file. If you downloaded a new set of cursors (the 15 files), you may change the ragnarok file names with your new set.

Replace the file names under [Scheme.cur] with your cursor's file names. Enter them in the correct places between the " " for the [Strings] part.

Save it as an .inf file in the same folder where your cursors are.

Right-click on the newly created install.inf file and click Install. It will automatically be saved on the mouse schemes.

Open Control Panel then click on Mouse.

On the Pointers tab, Choose the scheme you just installed, then click Apply. If there's a pop up prompt, just click Yes.

That's it! Now you can just erase the cursors you used (don't worry, they're already installed in the mouse's scheme so you won't need them anymore. unless you want a back up :D ). Enjoy your new mouse pointer scheme!

Till the next tech tidBeATs!
